Interested in an Earth Knack internship? Here's what you can expect. Interns live on the land at the Crestone school site. There is a teepee that can accommodate two people or you can set up your own tent or construct a primitive shelter for the duration of your stay. There is a fully equipped outdoor kitchen containing all cooking gear, utensils, dishes, oils, spices and teas. Participants buy their own food and prepare their own breakfast and lunches. Dinner is a shared communal preparation each evening around the campfire. We have two composting "soilettes" and an outdoor shower on the property. Interns pay a monthly rate of $290 to stay on the Earth Knack site from May through September.
Interns participate in all the skills and chores that happen on a daily basis. On any given day skills can include hide tanning, making primitive tanning tools, rawhide preparation, wool dying, felting, spinning or weaving, plant fiber or willow collection and preparation, stone tool work, blade hafting, basic blacksmithing, soap making, candle making, plant medicines, food preparation, dehydration, smoking or canning, animal butchering, bone tool making, buckskin sewing, earth pigment collection and paint making, plant dye preparation, fire tool collection, alternative building projects using straw bale, natural adobe, solar, log, and grey water methods, primitive structure projects, stone wall work, sustainable gardening, beekeeping, horse corral building, horse training, and animal husbandry. These are all things we are constantly engaged in and that provide educational opportunities for interns.
Daily chores include garden and fruit tree maintenance, planting and harvesting, rabbit, chicken, horse, dog, cat and bee feeding, compost maintenance, shop and facility clean up, horno and fire pit maintenance. We like to think participation in these daily chores is educational and fun for interns! Interns are expected to be motivated and know how to take initiative.
When an Earth Knack course is in session at the school site, (like a skills intensive) interns can choose to attend the course for the materials fee cost. Any off site courses or canoe trips in which interns choose to participate (like a Green River canoe) will require a full tuition payment.
Interns need positive and accepting attitudes. Earth Knack is open to the public and while you are associated with our school you are perceived as a representative of our program. Your personal appearance and behavior are important.
We are 9 miles from our town, which has a population of about 400, and limited services, and 65 miles from any other town with more services. You will need to have some kind of transportation. You can hike onto National forest and into the Sangre De Cristo Wilderness 1/2 mile from the school site, or into the Sand Dunes National Park. There are 3 natural hot springs areas within a 45 minute drive and Penitente climbing area is 1 hour across the valley. There are numerous white water rivers within an hour drive and dozens of 14,000 ft mountains to climb.
Drugs, alcohol, cigarettes and pets are not permitted on the Earth Knack property. Feel free to contact us with any questions. P.O.#508 Crestone, Colorado 81131 719-256-4909
